Welcome to Playhouse Books!

We are an independent children’s book publisher devoted to stories that invite curiosity, imagination, and deep emotional play.

We believe books are a kind of playhouse children can enter, explore, and return to again and again, finding something new each time.

Fill Your Hug Bank!

Our debut picture book, HOW TO FILL YOUR HUG BANK, arrives May 5.

What We Believe

Childhood is not a waiting room.
It’s a world unto itself—vibrant, complex, and wildly imaginative.

At Playhouse Books, we publish stories that honor that world and trust children to think, feel, wonder, and ask big questions. Whether you and your child are reading on the couch, at bedtime, or in a blanket fort, our books are meant to be read, discussed, read, and read again.

For grownups who care about children's books

Playhouse Books is for parents, caregivers, educators, librarians, and readers who believe children’s literature can be both joyful and substantial.

We publish books you’ll be happy to read again and again.
Books that spark conversation.
Books that feel at home on your shelves.

The Playhouse Books Team

Dottie Dixon is, first and foremost, a doting aunt to four wonderful niblings. As a former theater kid and lifelong storyteller, Dottie is a pro at turning small moments into big adventures. While she lives a private life managing a chronic illness, she channels her creativity into children’s books, often sparked by imaginative exploits with her first and favorite audience: her nieces and nephews. Her hope is that her stories will take on lives of their own, helping kids everywhere learn, laugh, and feel seen.

Sarah Welch is an editor, creative coach, and the founder of Inkdrop Lit. As a toddler mom and lifelong reader (often under the covers, far past bedtime), she’s passionate about helping children explore the world and their place in it through books.

Sarah has a BA in Creative Writing and an MA in publishing. She lives in Austin, Texas, with her husband, her son, a dog who can’t get enough hugs, and a cat who would prefer not to.
